I believe it's possible something may happen, but not sure it would be because of natural events. With this date ingrained into people's consciousness, I think someone, somewhere out there, will do something stupid.

We could only be so lucky. I'm sure there will be plenty of insanity ahead. Just in case, everyone should throw some really nice parties on December 20st, 2012.

Since a very young age I have been looking up things that I used to talk with my dad about. When I was three years old, one of my before-I-go-to-bed rituals was going outside and looking at the night sky. I would always point out which 'Star' I came from and my dad realized I would point to the same star every night. We would have long conversations about where I 'came' from, and how I would insist that I 'used to be big, a giant' , but couldn't understand how 'I became little'....I would also talk about noticing that people around me didn't seem to remember that they came from 'sky people'...So many 'memories', still intact to this day.
Many years have passed since then. I have seen the consciousness of the population of the world rise, a rise that parallels the destruction of the environments all life depends upon for its survival as a species. We seemed to have gone backwards. The Myths and Legends of all tribes of this world all talk of 'beings' that came from the heavens, and mixed with humanity. There are literally thousands of ancient stories in every country, and island in the world that predate all accepted Western 'history' and discuss, in great detail, the origins of humanity as we know it presently. There are thousands upon thousands of structures that dot the entire planet, on its surface and in the Ocean, that prove a sophistication, mastery and skill that is at odds with what we are taught in most schools and Universities. To me it's not a question of whether '2012' will happen literally or not. The Mayans, the Hopi, the Chinese and so many others did not pick that year at random. Time is a human invention I often say. After all, different cultures have different years. They are literally not in our accepted year of '2011', for example, or our Century for that matter. 'Time', really, is a measurement of light, shade, and darkness...That is all...And yes, the Ancient Ones were Masters of measuring light, shade, and darkness...And any movement that occurs in the process...
If one is in tune with Earth's vibrational field then one can feel what is going all around us. And this 'feeling' in reality is more akin to a 'sense' really, because it has everything to do with a 'perception' that involves all the senses (the 'recognized' five) plus all those other senses that we all possess but which are not recognized as being fully valid by the 'established' science self-appointed 'experts'.
I absolutely sense that we are at a point of great and immense change. Humanity as a whole has to evolve, one way or another. The complete abuse of our planet, which is alive in spite of anyone saying otherwise, and of all living things has brought us to where were we are today. We are not only living with terrible disasters worldwide, but we also all on the brink of yet more disasters to come, absolutely.
There is nothing we can do about averting what is already happening. My humble contribution is to say to prepare oneself. Make sure you live somewhere where there are no fault lines, volcanoes, Rifts, fractures and coasts. Learn to grow herbs, vegetables and fruits hydroponically. Learn how to generate your own electricity. Learn how to use a bow and arrow. Buy a Geiger counter, and DIY Survival Guide. Stock up on having all the plants that you will need to make medicines and remedies of any kind. Make sure you have access to your own well...Try to have as many 'how to' books as possible, and have plenty of manual tools for all types of tasks...Basically, familiarize yourself with anything and everything that has to do with taking care of yourself yourself without depending on someone else to take care of you. If enough people do these things then it will make the difference. Obviously, many will not do these things.
A thousand years ago, the estimated world population was 275 million people. By 1750 it was approximately 700 million. In 1850 the world's population was estimated to be 1.2 billion people. Now, we're hovering at 7 Billion people. It is not sustainable, by any means. All political/economic/philosophical/ideological systems have been tried and ALL are found wanting. We have answers to everything. And yet, we live in a world full of savagery, ignorance, cruelty and wanton decadence. We give value to that which has none while destroying that which cannot ever be replaced. The Ancients wrote about it. The Mountains, the Oceans, the entire planet bears the marks of all that's happened while we've been here. Our Galaxy is traveling, moving through space...People seem to forget that. People forget that Earth is moving, the Sun is moving, the Galaxy is moving. Nothing stays the same, ever. To believe that the mountains we have seen all our lives will always be there is ridiculous. There are entire mountain chains in the Ocean that once were on the surface. Just because most people cannot fathom (or find proof) that there were 'modern' humans two million years ago does not mean there weren't any;
Changes are happening, and will continue to happen. Land will go underwater because it's supposed to. Devastating earthquakes will happen because that is Earth's way. Everything in between that exacerbates the disasters, such as nuclear accidents, war, and the poisoning of the planet's resources is entirely the choosing and doing of human beings.
History is littered with the stories of former empires and countries that were mighty and covered huge portions of the world. There are also many 'lost' continents, parts of which have been found definitely, that attest to the existence of some incredible civilization that has been 'lost' to us. I am sure that Antarctica has much buried under its thick layer of ice. If only everyone could 'remember' I say.
